Cranberry is a quintessential holiday flavor and my go-to drink flavor throughout the holiday season.

I always add orange zest to my cranberry sauce at Thanksgiving, which got me thinking about what a perfect pairing cranberry and orange are.

So let's take that idea and turn it into a rich and delicious simple syrup that can be used for all kind of delicious drinks.

Mix Cranberry Orange Simple Syrup with club soda and/or ginger beer for an easy mocktail. Create a tasty co*cktail by combining it with gin and ginger beer, or stir it up with bourbon for a delicious cranberry old fashioned.

This simple syrup can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator so you're always prepared for any unexpected holiday guests, an impromptu homemade happy hour, or well deserved night cap.

  • Cranberries - Use fresh or frozen cranberries here. Dried cranberries won't work in this recipe.
  • Sugar - Choose white sugar (either beet sugar or cane sugar) for this recipe.
  • Fresh orange - You need the peel as well as the juice from the orange for this syrup, so only a fresh orange will work here.

FAQs and Substitutions

Can I use bottled orange juice?

Yes, but since you need the peel from the orange, use the rest of the fruit and juice it. Fresh juice really does make a difference.

What kind of oranges should I use?

I like to use a navel orange in this recipe, but juice oranges and cara cara oranges work great as well. Blood oranges are also delicious. If you decide to use blood oranges in this recipe you may need to up the sugar by a tablespoon or two since blood oranges are often a bit tart.

Do I need fresh or frozen cranberries?

Either one! Add frozen berries directly from the freezer or use fresh. Frozen berries will cause the syrup to take a few extra minutes to come to a boil, but that’s the only difference.

What other kind of sugar can I use?

If you don’t want to use refined white sugar, swap it out for honey or agave.Stay away from maple syrup or brown sugar, which will change the flavor too much.

FAQs

What effect does simple syrup have in co*cktails? ›

Simple syrup is a liquid sweetener made by dissolving sugar in water. That's literally it. Simple syrup disperses sweetness evenly throughout beverages of any temperature, making it a key component of many iced drinks and co*cktails (like sparkling beet lemonade or a whiskey sour).

What is a substitute for simple syrup in co*cktails? ›

If you're looking for a simple syrup substitute, there are three favorites you probably have right in your home: honey, maple syrup and agave. For honey or agave, add warm water to them, to help turn the mix to syrup. You can also use a sweet, juicy fruit, like an orange.

Does simple syrup need to be refrigerated? ›

Refrigerating simple syrup extends its shelf life and slows the future growth of bacteria. You can keep it at room temperature, but it will go bad much faster. If you plan use up it up within a few days, it can be stored at room temperature. Otherwise I highly recommend storing it in the fridge or freezer.

How much simple syrup should you add to a drink? ›

The Golden Ratio is just this simple recipe: 2 parts spirit (rum, tequila, vodka, whiskey, gin, cognac etc.) 1 part sweet (honey, simple syrup, agave syrup, triple sec, liqueur, fruit syrups etc.)

Is store bought simple syrup the same as homemade? ›

Not only is making simple syrup ridiculously easy - you just combine equal parts white sugar and hot water and stir until dissolved - but store-bought simple syrup can't be used in most co*cktail recipes because the sugar/water ratios are off. All co*cktail recipes are written assuming scratch-made syrup is being used.

Can I just use sugar instead of simple syrup? ›

One teaspoon of granulated white sugar equals about 1.5 teaspoons of simple syrup. If your recipe calls for a teaspoon of simple syrup, you might want to drop in only about two-thirds of a teaspoon of the granulated variety. You can always add more sugar, but you can't take it back out.

Can I use triple sec instead of simple syrup? ›

No, triple sec is not the same as simple syrup. Triple sec is a type of clear, colorless liqueur made from orange peels and used to add a sweet and citrusy flavor to co*cktails. On the other hand, simple syrup is a basic co*cktail sweetener made by dissolving equal parts sugar and water.

What's the difference between cranberry juice and cranberry co*cktail? ›

Cranberry juice is usually labeled "100% juice." Other fruits are sometimes added to balance the tart cranberry taste, but that label indicates that the product is made with 100% fruit juices. Cranberry juice co*cktail, meanwhile, has added sugars or high-fructose corn syrup for extra sweetness.

Why is cranberry juice always a co*cktail? ›

The term "cranberry juice co*cktail" or "cranberry juice blend" refers to products that contain about 28% cranberry juice, with the remainder either from other fruit juice concentrates (typically grape, apple or pear), water, and added sugar to improve palatability.

Cranberries may reduce insulin resistance

Eating them with a meal, even if they're sweetened as in cranberry sauce, causes a smaller increase in blood sugar levels than eating the same meal without cranberries.

What are the two types of cranberry sauce? ›

Cranberry sauce can be served either as a gooey liquid or as a solid jelly. The jellied version is solid enough to retain the shape of the container in which it's placed whereas the sauce version is much more fluid. The difference between the fluid sauce and the jelly versions comes down to pectin.

Why is canned cranberry sauce so good? ›

I love the texture, shape, ridges, and dependability of the cranberry sauce that comes from a can. Each year, no matter what happens or may go wrong, I know the cranberry sauce will taste exactly as it has for as long as I can remember.

Also referred to as "sugar syrup," simple syrup is a liquefied form of sugar that is commonly used to sweeten co*cktails, iced tea, iced coffee, lemonade, and other cold drinks. Because it is a liquid sweetener, it is much easier to blend into cold beverages than regular sugar.
